Best Ice Cream In The World - Hanover

Published: 31.07.2014 by Kyrre Dahl in category: Germany

The search is over! I have found the best ice cream in the world. The Strawberry cup at Eiscafè Colosseum in Hannover is my number one ice cream!

I have known about this place for years, and I have been here dozen of times. This was the place where I first encountered the german ice cafès. I was travelling around Europe with an interrail ticket and by coincidence I stopped in Hannover (Hanover) and sat down on a cafè at the main railway station.

I was blown away when the ice cream arrived on my table, This is the largest ice cream cup I have ever seen ( of normal standards) and 14 years later it is still the largest I have seen. And I have seen a lot of ice cream. The first thing I noticed was the mountain of strawberries on the top of the cup.

There are so many fresh strawberries that I was almost full before I got to the ice cream. But, the ice cream is really tasteful, even the sorbet, which normally isn`t my thing. And on the bottom there are actually more strawberries and a strawberry sauce! Even the cream is good at this cafè.

But, it doesn`t stop there, the Strawberry Cup, Erdbeerbecher, is quite cheap. At just 5,10 euros it is one of the cheapest strawberries cup I have eaten. Ususally it costs way more, and it is smaller. There is even a large strawberry cup at Eiscafe Colosseum. At 8,60 euros this must be for two persons or heaven for a ice cream lover. I haven`t tried the big one, the "small" is more than enough.

There are lots of tables at Eiscafè Colosseum. There must more than 100 both inside in two floors and outside on the main railway square, which is in many ways the centre of the city centre of Hanover. This square is always full of people, so this is a perfect spot for people watching ( and ice cream )

Of course, The Colosseum serves several different kinds of ice cream, and ice cream cups, in addition to coffee and cakes. I think they also serves alcohol, that is normal in german ice cafès. And some of the ice cream may contain alcohol.

As I said, I have known about this place for a long time, and I have even made sure my train stops in Hannover so I can order my favourite ice cream. I must say this is, for me, the main reason to visit Hannover. It is a nice medium size city, but there is little to see for tourists. But, The city is famous for large conventions and fairs.

You will find Eiscafè Colosseum in the main railway station in Hannover ( Hanover ) next to the main entrance on the railway square. You can`t miss it if you are arriving by train. The train station itself is huge and full of shops and crowded with passengers.
