Everybody loves ice cream! - by Kyrre Dahl

A Neighbourhood delight in Berlin

Published: 14.07.2014 by Kyrre Dahl in category: Germany

Viktoria Eis is a typical example of an idyllic Berlin neighbourhood ice cream cafè. It is not in the city centre and therefore Viktoria Eis has to serve good ice cream to survive. And, judging by the queues, they do well.

The cafè is located on Viktoria-Luise-Platz in the the upmarket neighbourhood of Schöneberg. It is a nice looking ice cream cafè, with several pavement tables and chairs. I was lucky enough to get a table on a sunny sunday afternoon and I ordered a strawberry cup, Erdbeerbecher.

The first impression was: " wow, that`s a lot of strawberries" the second was: "these strawberries are yummy", but the third thought: "too much cream!" When I finally found the ice cream there were three scoops, strawbery sorbet, vanilla and chocolate. All were good tasting, but the chocolate had almost melted so it was more like a sauce.

The price was 6 euros, which is ok in this part of Berlin, and I have no problem recommending this place. I would suggest less cream, so it is actually possible to eat the last scoop of ice cream before it melts. The service was very friendly, although a bit chaotic, as you have to walk inside to order, and walk past all the people waiting for takeaway ice cream. The ice cream comes to your table, so don`t worry.

Viktoria Eis actually has two outlets on Viktoria-Luise-Platz. The cafè is on Motzstrasse, but you will get the same ice cream next to the subway station. The subway is U4, which is a very short line and you wll have to change at Nollendorfplatz for most destinations. It is however only four blocks south of Wittenbergplatz and KaDeWe, so walking is recommended. The platz itself is a beautiful neighbourhood square with several cafès and restaurants.
